If any one of the 24,000 people suffering from leukaemia in this country don't respond to chemotherapy, a transplant can be their only hope. The problem is that there aren't enough donors. And giving bone marrow isn't like giving blood; its all about diversity of the donors, not quantity. Young people, men and people from UK ethnic minorities are especially in demand. I'm young, and Indian-British mixed, so I decided to sign up on the Breakfast Show. The Anthony Nolan TrustSo on Tuesday morning, I paid a visit to the headquarters of leukaemia charity, the Antony Nolan Trust, in Belsize Park. I had to fill in a lot of forms to make sure I was fit and healthy, and then I had some counselling. All donors have to understand the implications of what they're signing up for. Anjana, left, with nurse Sharon After that, the fun bit; the blood sample. I decided to do that live on air, much to the concern of Sharon the nurse. She was a bit worried that I wouldn't relax if I had to think about what I was saying at the same time. Waiting for a matchBut she'd offered me a few choccie biccies for when I'd finished, so I was perfectly relaxed.听 My blood's now been sent to be analysed and my details stored on a database. So if somebody around the world needs a transplant and we turn out to be compatible, I'll be contacted to make my donation. This is the slightly scary bit. Some of the marrow from my hip bone could be taken out via a needle when I'm under general anaesthetic; or I could be wired up to a machine for a few hours which filters out the good bits in my blood. I don't think either will be pleasant and I'll have to take some time of work - but if you weigh that up against saving a life, it's not too much of a hardship!
