Art work by Tower Hamlets girls

Exploring the Unthinkable

Over 200 girls confront prejudice and hate crime in an innovative exhibition, developed by an East End school.

The 鈥楨xploring the Unthinkable鈥 Exhibition launches on 14th July at the Rich Mix Centre in Bethnal Green Road and provides a unique insight into issues around equality and discrimination affecting young people today.

The exhibition showcases the work of students from the Central Foundation Girls School in Bow.听 Participants were given the chance to creatively explore issues around discrimination like bullying, homosexuality, Islamaphobia and racism.听 They used art, drama, literature, dance and music to bring their messages to life.

""The girls鈥 response was very challenging"."

Rabina Khan, project coordinator

Funded through the Tower Hamlets Partnership, 鈥楨xploring the Unthinkable鈥 takes a long hard look at prejudice.听 It encourages pupils to think about the challenges of tackling discrimination both in the wider community, and at school.

Rabina Khan, author

The project was coordinated by Anne McNulty, a teacher from the school, and writer and community worker Rabina Khan.听 She said: 鈥淭he girls鈥 response to it was very challenging.听 Chin Wag Theatre鈥檚 role-play approach delved under the surface of embedded attitudes.听 The girls then had to think very carefully about how to express themselves.鈥

The exhibition includes a wide variety of media forms including screenplays, clay sculptures, textiles, live poetry and a drama based DVD.

Rabina Khan who has worked in the East End for fifteen years may be an ideal role model for the girls, having recently published her second novel Ayesha鈥檚 Rainbow.听 It explores the friendship which blooms between a young Bangladeshi girl and her white elderly neighbour.

Rabina found the project very fulfilling and says she is looking forward to working on stage 2.

The exhibition is free and runs until the end of July.
