When Masterfoods, manufacturers of Mars, Snickers and other popular brands announced it was going to use animal products in its chocolate bars, it seems they were completely oblivious to the repercussions they would have to face.

Perhaps harsh criticism from vegetarians is not surprising but competition from a small Muslim chocolate business is a bit!

Khalid Sharif launched Halal chocolate bars back in 2004, intending to attract a niche but growing Muslim market. Little was he to know vegetarians globally would be drawn to his product as a result of the blunder made by Masterfoods. He says:

"The Vegetarian society has been in touch and we found ourselves on vegetarian blogs saying [Ummah chocolate] is an alternative… we're really grateful for that coverage."

Why Halal?

Khalid's chocolates are Halal because they are treated in accordance to Islam law. They are vegetarian, the cleaning products used in his factory are alcohol free, and lastly even the film and glue used to wrap the chocolate does not contain animal fats.

You'll find Khalid's chocolates in a handful of Tescos in and around London and Morrisons and Asdas are following suit as well.
