Title: Volunteering in the capital | Ìý | | Film maker: | Andre Carvalho | Length: | 3:36 mins | Date: | January 2007 | Subject: | volunteering, homeless, Crisis |
In the first in a new series of films about what it takes to give up your time and volunteer in the capital, we follow Andre Carvalho, Volunteer Manager at the charity Crisis as he takes charge of over 6,000 people for the Crisis Open Christmas. With 1,200 homeless people a day visiting the seven centres across London, a record number of volunteers were on hand to make sure the festivities went off without a hitch. When it's all over, 27,000 meals have been served, nearly 200 people have got new glasses and everyone from dentistsÌýto podiatrists have given up their time to provide a break for homeless people at a time when they need it most. But that's when the work really begins, we'll return to Crisis later in the year as the guests head back to the streets, not only feeling physically better, but also having signed up to courses and got the help they need to support them throughout the new year. As Andre reflects on the difference a record number of volunteers can make, for over a hundred guests they've found the help they need to hopefully make this their last Crisis Open Christmas.
