More than 400 children in Newham are known to be at risk of abuse or neglect. But Zainab Adan, a child protection social worker, believes the number could be many more.

She says that many forms of child cruelty are hidden under the pretence of cultural tradition or religion, and a reluctance to discuss them is putting many more young people in danger.

"There is a big hurdle of secrecy and shame which keeps certain traditions alive, but it can be overcome. I am from the Somali community, but I disagree with female gender mutilation. Cultures are not static. They evolve and these practices have to be repudiated," says Zainab.

In September 2006 Zainab was appointed by Newham Council to deal with child protection issues in ethnic minority communities.

In particular, she is responsible for changing perceptions in faith and community groups about witchcraft, honour violence, child trafficking and female genital mutilation.
