Anger over plans for super-church in Rainham

Residents have spoken out against plans to move the country's largest evangelical church to Rainham.

The Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC) has to move from its current premises in Hackney because the site is within the 2012 Olympic park.

Now the London Development Agency (LDA), which owns their current site in Waterden Road, has suggested the church buy LDA owned land on the Beam Reach Business Park.

The church regularly attracts thousands of people to its services. It is thought a 拢35 million arena which could hold an 8,000 strong congregation, is being proposed.

Local residents say they're worried the village just doesn't have the transport infrastructure to deal with such a large number of people on its roads.

Cllr听 Len Long (South Hornchurch, Residents Group) said: "I'm not against [the church] but the sheer amount of people is going to cause problems".

There's also been concern because the Beam Reach business park has been marked by the LDA as a site put aside for business and employment development.听 Hornchurch MP James Brokenshire has questioned what economic benefit the church could bring.

The LDA says that the area being considered for the KICC is small in relation to the rest of the site, and therefore any move would not have a significant impact on business development and economic opportunities at the business park.

They say the main reason for choosing the site was because of the parking facilities it could offer, ensuring local roads don't come under too much pressure.

But residents aren't convinced, with some, such as Cllr Jeffrey Tucker, pointing to the fact that the area had its bid to host the Casino turned down because it was said the local infrastructure could not cope.

Cllr Tucker says if the plans go ahead the traffic would be horrendous, with queues going back as far as the A1306.

The London Thames Gatesway Development Agency (LTGDA), who would be responsible for giving planning permission for this development, say they've not yet received any planning applications from the church with regards to this site.

But the LDA have confirmed that they have offered this land to the church, and staff from Havering Council and the LTGDA recently met with representatives of the church.

The KICC declined to comment.
