RaWYou are in: London > RaW > To Anybody that says Football is Pointless To Anybody that says Football is Pointlessby James Mcilroy Anybody who says they hate football has never taken the time to understand the true meaning of the game. Write your own storyWin match tickets, a day with your London football team, stadium tours and season tickets by writing your own football story.People who dislike football like waffling on about the media scandals off the pitch and other nonsense saying ‘’it’s just a load of blokes running around a pitch’’ and ‘’the game is pointless.’’ Yes some players are overpaid, agents are getting greedier, the match fixing scandal that has seen the Juventus board resign in Italy is a complete disgrace and the professional game sees more and more players each year earning in excess of £100,000 A WEEK. Some players have demanded such wages but the clubs themselves over the last ten years have transformed from teams into world wide franchises making millions through sales. Over recent years some people believe football has created an image that it is all about the money.
Smiles all-roundBut let’s overlook all that for a minute and go backÌý to the reason why a football match is being played in the first place, not just in huge stadiums in London and Madrid but all over South America and Africa, some of the poorest places in the world. The aim of a football match is to kick the ball in to the back of the net. This is called a goal. Goals come in all forms, some are beauties and some are scrappy but all bring unbridled joy to the scorer and anybody associated with the scorer. That is the point of football. That is why we play and whether it is scored at the San Siro, between two traffic cones in a car park or on a dirt track in Africa, a goal is a goal and it will always bring smiles all-round. Remember the top European leagues are the main stage; the best players from all over the world play here and the likes of Ronaldinho and Eto’o get a chance to show what they can do. These are two of many players who have been raised in poverty but are both now recognised as the top two players in the world.Ìý In parts of South America and Africa football is all some kids have to make them happy while they dream a better life. So next time you say football is pointless, remember that this great game brings joy to millions less fortunate than yourself. last updated: 21/01/2008 at 12:44 You are in: London > RaW > To Anybody that says Football is Pointless |
