Dermot's Day

A number of years ago my park team had arranged a friendly match with some guys from a nearby pub at our local recreation ground.

Write your own story

Win match tickets, a day with your London football team, stadium tours and season tickets by writing your own football story.

Whilst the players were warming up they were constantly pestered by Dermot, the fourteen year old brother of one of our players, who was intent on participating in the match somehow.
鈥淐an I play, go on. It鈥檚 only a friendly鈥?
鈥淣o, go away Dermot, you鈥檙e not going to play鈥.
鈥淎w, go on. I鈥檓 just as good as all of you lot鈥.

This was actually true, he was far more skilful than anyone on the pitch and he was also faster and fitter, by virtue of the fact that unlike the players he hadn鈥檛 as yet discovered beer. In fact the only reason that he wasn鈥檛 selected was that he was small for his age and our opponents from the White Hart pub were not the type of blokes to take that into consideration.

This request turned down Dermot then asked if he could referee and when this was denied him he then asked if he could run the line. This final request was agreed upon and Dermot rummaged through my kit back to find the linesman鈥檚 flag, even though kick-off was still twenty minutes away.

"...unlike the players he hadn鈥檛 as yet discovered beer"

No show

It was at about this time that one of the players raised a concern that our opponents hadn鈥檛 shown up as yet, a concern that spread to everyone as the clock approached the appointed start time. Eventually, one of our players, who happened to also be Dermot鈥檚 older brother, decided to drive round to the house of one of our opponents, who lived near by, to see what was happening.

About ten minutes later he arrived back at the ground and made a bee-line for Dermot whilst all of the players gathered around, eager to hear the news.
鈥淒ermot, did you meet Danny Moran this week鈥?
鈥淵eh, I saw him on Monday鈥.
鈥淎nd did he give you a message for me鈥?
鈥渊别丑鈥.
鈥淲ell, what was it鈥?
鈥淗e said the game鈥檚 off cause they can鈥檛 raise a team鈥.

As the penny dropped, Dermot dropped the linesman鈥檚 flag and turned to leg it for the gate as fifteen blokes just stood in silence in their football kit, too stunned, and if truth be known, too shattered from the warm up to even give chase.听
