London Bombings

Horses - Stepps Rehabilitation Centre

Horse therapy for 7/7 trauma victims

Horses are being used to help those affected by last year's suicide attacks in the capital.

London Underground has sent more than a dozen of its tube staff to the Stepps Rehabilitation Centre in Gloucestershire.

It's said that shires horses have the ability to sense the suppressed feelings of people around them. And it's hoped this natural gift - or equine-assisted psychotherapy - will help tube staff confront their feelings and break down barriers

Mike Delaney, Stepps Rehabilition Centre

Mike Delaney from the Stepps Rehabilitation Centre says: "It's a much bigger acknowledgement that something bad has happened and can bring feelings to the fore, making it more acceptable for people, and men in particular, to come forward and acknowledge fear and sadness and grief."

But London's transport bosses realise that the impact of experiencing something as traumatic as a terrorist attack could take years to show itself.

"It may well be that over the next one or two years people we're working with here will need to reveal things that happened on 7/7 which they didn't think at the time affected them because the way they dealt with it was to simply carry on."

The 7 July Assistance Centre is open until 8pm on 10 July. The helpline number is 0845 054 7444.
