The Chimes of Big Ben

Listen online to the famous chimes ringing out across London

Big Ben

  • Big Ben is the name of the bell on which the clock strikes the hour.
  • The clock is called The Great Westminster Clock and was fully operational in 1859.

You can now listen to the unique chimes of Big Ben as never heard before!

We have three recordings you can listen to;

  • 12 noon chimes at street level
  • 2pm chimes directly behind Big Ben
  • The quarter chimes from the clock room

Big Ben first rang out across London in 1859 together with the four quarter bells which accompany Big Ben in the Westminster chimes.

Noon Chimes

Recorded at the foot of Big Ben close to Westminster Bridge. Listen as pedestrians and traffic noise become insignificant as twelve chimes ring out across the capital.

Duration: 1 minute 17 seconds

2pm Chimes

Exclusive recording made directly behind the bell - Big Ben. After the 200 kg hammer strikes the bell you can hear the sound reverberate long after the strike.

Quarter Chimes

Recorded in the clock room where you can hear the machinery working to produce the quarter chimes.

Duration: 17 seconds
