All fresh produce is shipped from Holland, whilst candles, soaps and cards are all sourced direct from France and Germany. Even if you don't actually want to buy anything, this is a wonderful place to breathe in some wonderful scents. over 125 stores Farmers' and Arts and Crafts MarketThroughout the year Bromley's joint Farmers' and Arts and Crafts market takes place in the pedestrian area of Bromley High Street, between the Churchill Theatre and Elmfield Road. To complement the other retail outlets in the town centre, the market stalls offer a wide range of goods such as original paintings, wrought iron metalwork, handmade jewellery, dried flower arrangements and wooden toys. There are smaller alcoves for a cosy gathering and a small garden area for the summer months. Red LionTucked away up a back-street is this friendly pub. It is only small and can get very crowded but the atmosphere is always good. Part of the Greene King chain, it serves IPA, Abbot, Harveys and two regularly changing guest beers. Ye George InnYe George Inn is a lovely traditional pub, serving a good selection of cask ales and boasting a selection of freshly prepared dishes, such as Thai fish cakes and pies. For the hot summer evenings they've got a lovely quiet garden to relax in. Ye Olde BlacksmithsA very popular pub with the locals, this pub attracts office workers by day and a regular crowd in the evening, although everyone is made welcome. It's an old style pub with a friendly service and Sky Sport for the big matches. The Tapas menu is excellent and the main menu is also superb; the house specialties are suckling pig and baby leg of lamb. They have a popular Sunday lunch menu but don't forget to try their tasty paellas. rustic bar/ restaurant Caligvlette RestaurantThis charming idiosyncratic restaurant stands out with murals and plants outside and an amazing collection of bric-a-brac inside. The food is largely Mediterranean (seafood and pastas) and very tasty. Every Thursday they have a fortune teller and on alternate Sundays a Frank Sinatra impersonator, or a pianist and opera singers entertain whilst you dine. Chapter OneJust two miles out of Bromley is the AA Restaurant of the year for 2004 – Chapter One. Chef Andy McLeish has achieved a Michelin star and 4AA rosettes for his modern European dishes, so there's no doubts about the excellence of the food. The price is also appealing: you can get a two course lunch for only £16.50. Ferraris Italian BrasserieThis is a minimalist Italian brassiere where modern art work hangs on the walls. You can come here for a quick pizza or pasta and a glass of wine, or you can linger over a three course meal. america themed cafe La RascasseThis rustic restaurant-come-bar is split in two with a bar area on one side and a dining room on the other. The walls are flanked with pine panelling and exposed brick work, whilst a terrace at the rear is perfect for a chilled glass of Chablis on a summer evening. The menu consists of all things extravagant, with oysters and champagne alongside seafood and a chargrill selection. Miso Noodle BarThis simply decorated food bar, is a great stop off place for some steamed dumplings and soup noodles. Settle down at one of the plain wooden tables and tuck into the likes of Miso Choice (soup noodles with a combination of chicken beef, char sui, duck and prawn), or some prawn, chicken or vegetable dumplings. Over the MoonLocated next to Bromley South train station, Over the Moon is where to stop for your morning caffeine kick. The coffee is made from 100% freshly ground Arabica beans, whilst lunchtimes host a good selection of freshly baked French baguettes and toasted paninis. Poppins Café RestaurantPoppins is your typical local café...with a twist. The whole establishment and the waiting staff, have adopted an American theme: the menu serves up your regular breakfast and burger meals, but also hash browns, muffins and Sunday roasts. Once you've tried their crispy duck and chilli beef, you'll keep coming back for more.Ìý ZizziZizzi is a relatively minimalist restaurant chain, with wooden furniture and floors, leather chairs and an open kitchen with a wood-fired oven. The menu is pizza and pasta dominated, with a couple of Calzone to promote that authentic Italian feel. For sunny Bromley days, the front of the restaurant opens up onto a small terrace - you could almost be in Rome (honest!). SOUNDSBiba's Night ClubFirst impressions of Biba might evoke thoughts of ancient Greece, goddesses and handsome, rippled bodies. Unfortunately, these may be unattainable dreams in Bromley. What you do get is a good party atmosphere, a charged up crowd and some enticing drinks promotions. Bar FluxThis local hot spot has a capacity to fit 300 revellers under its roof, with DJ's playing the best in commercial dance and club classics. They also serve some of the best cocktails in Beckenham! JazzminsIf you're looking for somewhere local to experience the sounds of the 70's, 80's and 90's, Jazzmins is probably your best bet. There are regular DJ spots, a hyped up crowd at the weekend and the opportunity to avoid an expensive cab journey back from central London. Langtry'sIf you live anywhere in the close proximity of Beckenham you will, no doubt, already have had the Langtry's experience. If not, where have you been? On Friday the club plays R'n'B, Garage and House and on Saturdays it's a cutting edge history of club music.Ìý once an underground town! Pizza ExpressLocated in the heart of Beckenham, this restaurant is popular with many locals for it's popular Dinner Jazz evenings where you can see star musicians on Piano, Double Bass and Saxophone. ARTS AND CULTUREBromley MuseumThe Bromley Museum charts the history of the local area from a quarter of a million years ago: you can see objects and artefacts from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum is very family friendly, with a strong events programme throughout the year (call for details). Chislehurst CavesDiscover over 20 miles of dark mysterious passageways, sitting just beyond the outskirts of London. Used as an ammunition store in the First World War, these chalk carved chasms became an underground town during the Second World War, housing up to 15,000 people! There are 45minute lamp-lit tours, during which you will take in the Druid Altar and Haunted Pool. The Churchill TheatreThe Churchill Theatre is renowned for presenting a wide range of top quality productions, many of which première here before West End runs or national tours. The theatre also has a fantastic education department, which runs workshops for all ages. Crofton Roman VillaThe Crofton Roman Villa was inhabited from approximately 140AD to 400AD and stood at the centre of a farming estate, which is estimated to have covered approximately 500 acres. The remains of ten rooms are still on show to the public today, two of which contain the remains of the 'opus signinum' floors. There is also evidence of original tiled flooring and the under-floor central heating system which would have existed at the time of inhabitation. There are special activities for children, including mosaic making and dressing up as Romans. Special events occur throughout the year: please call for details. Down HouseThis was the home of Charles Darwin for over 40 years. You can see where Darwin worked and absorb the calm and peaceful atmosphere that so inspired him. The gardens and grounds are also open to the public, including the greenhouse where Darwin carried out some of his experiments. Helen O'Grady Children’s Drama AcademyThe Children's Drama Academy offers a self development drama programme for children aged 5-17 years. The programme encompasses a huge range of drama activities aimed at increasing confidence, self esteem and verbal skills. Orpington RepEstablished 60 years ago, the Rep performs three productions a year with a diverse range of members and performers. Whether you want to appear on stage, try your hand at costume design or create the perfect backdrop, this is where to get a taste of theatre life. Ripley Arts CentreRipley Arts Centre has monthly changing art exhibitions, regular concerts, practical art workshops and educational courses. There are rooms for hire for arts activities, business conferences, meetings and workshops. Bromley Arts Council, which owns and is based at the centre, was formed in 1965 to maintain, improve and develop the arts in Bromley. OUTDOORSBeckenham GreenBeckenham Green is not necessarily an ideal place to chill out on a summers day, butÌý it is a hot-spot for wedding photos and lunch breaks. Church House Gardens and Library GardensThese formal gardens are at their most spectacular in the spring and autumn when the formal flowerbeds, shrubs and trees are awash with colour. There's a paddling pool for the children to enjoy in the summer months and in 2004 a new playground with disabled access opened. There's a lake here with a concert platform, and the park offers stunning views over Bromley. Croydon Road Recreation GroundThis is a friendly family park and a great place to walk the dog. There's a football pitch, bowling green, tennis court, ballpark, playground and paddling pool. If all that exercise wears you out, then you can relax with a coffee at the café and watch the clouds go by. Crystal Palace ParkThe 200 acre park dates back to the Great Exhibition and you can still see the remains of the old palace here. It's perfect for walks, jogging, children's activities and the world's first dinosaur park, originally built in 1851! The park has recently undergone major rebuilding and landscaping work, bringing it back to its former Victorian splendour. Jubilee Country ParkThe park covers a mixture of woodland, meadows, hedges and scrub. It is an important wildlife link with nearby areas of countryside such as Petts Wood and Scadbury Park and as such was declared a local nature reserve in 1996. An active friends group was set up last year to help with the conservation work; people interested in joining the group can call for details. Kelsey ParkThis beautiful arts and crafts park is an old manor ground and was given to the local people in 1913: highly ornamental with a lake in the middle, it is home to an array of wildlife, including badgers, foxes, geese and swans, whilst there is also a small aviary and rose garden. If you're looking for somewhere to take the kids, an escape or purely somewhere to relax, this is the perfect place to visit. There is also a kids' play area, tennis courts and a mini golf centre. There's a café on site and on street parking is available all around Kelsey Park. Priory GardensPriory Gardens is the old priory grounds: the original building still stands, but is now the Orpington library and museum. The gardens have an arts and crafts influence with a walled garden and a lake, which is the source of the river Cray. It's home to local wildlife and birds and there's an active friends group who assist with maintenance of the gardens. Queens GardensSmall but perfectly formed, this highly ornamental park has recently been awarded a green flag. It's one of only a few parks that is right in the centre of a town and people flock here for the peace and quiet it provides. Every year there's a changing horticultural display and a café overlooks it. A jazz festival and garden show is held here every year. SPORTAdventure KingdomLooking for somewhere really fun to take the children to play? Adventure Kingdom is a children's soft play centre packed with ball ponds, slides, swing-bags and scramble nets. The centre caters for children up to the age of 11, although height restrictions may apply. Facilities include a cafeteria, baby changing facilities and a designated party area. Bromley Football ClubFounded in 1892, Bromley Football Club have since won the Kent Senior Cup four times, the Kent Amateur Cup 12 times and the London Senior Cup on three occasions. Bromley Rugby Football ClubThe local RFC offering senior and youth league games with a bit of a social bend on the side. Darrick Wood PoolDarrick Wood Pool is home to public swimming sessions, Mon-Thurs evenings, Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings. Whilst there is also a Tumblewood soft play centre and a full range of adult and junior swimming lessons. Darrick Wood School Sports CentreDarrick Wood School Sports Centre offers a diverse range of casual sessions including aerobics, badminton, fencing, and trampolining. Facilities include a sports hall, gymnasium and a fully equipped fitness suite. Norman Park Athletics TrackThe Norman Park Athletics Track boasts a six lane all-weather track and facilities for field events, as well as playing host to the Blackheath and Bromley Harriers athletics club. Norman Park Track Management Ltd run a weekly session for under 11's each Wednesday (4.15pm - 5.30pm) from mid April to mid October each year. The Pavilion Leisure CentreThe Pavilion consists of a leisure pool with flumes, wave machine and bubble loungers, poolside bistro, crèche, bar, five squash courts, two meeting rooms available for hire, a multi-purpose sports hall and a performance hall offering a selection of different fitness classes. The Spa at BeckenhamExpect a real treat at this local centre with an air-conditioned, fully equipped gym, Space Zone, a three storey soft play centre for children, two pools, a multi-use sports hall, squash courts and studios, and for those who wish to escape the exercise there's a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. The Walnuts Leisure CentreThis large multi-purpose complex consists of a main pool, teaching pool, two sports halls, five squash courts, dance studio, crèche and a café.
