An excellent dining choice if you're after a true taste of the area. offering a tasty variety of burgers Café JapanThis place specialises in Sushi and Sashimi and is always packed thanks to the top notch nosh. For those of you who may need some help with your order, the waitresses are very helpful and friendly. Lunch is good value as the prices are cheaper than in the evening. °ä³ó´Ç±è²õ³Ù¾±³æÌýA lively restaurant which has a good buffet ranging from £5.80 to £12.80, depending when you go. If you catch the right crowd on a Friday night, you'll be swept up in some enthusiastic karaoke. Fine Burger Co.As much about fashion as food, the Fine Burger Company looks and smells Muswell Hill; you'll be sitting next to young trendy things and designer families. The food really is excellent - try their chicken burger with satay sauce, a lamb and mint burger or a tasty veggie burger. It’s great for a lunch treat or an evening out and they are very child friendly with a cab rank of highchairs. Haven Bistro and BarWhen Haven opened its doors in 2001 it was an instant success and was named 'North London Restaurant of the year 2005' by the Barnet Press. The service here is friendly and the food is superb; think oven baked monkfish with ratatouille roast couscous and Rack of English lamb with a herb crust. The attached cocktail bar is worth exploring too! Loch Fyne RestaurantSimply decorated with wooden furniture and pictures of the Scottish Lochs, this restaurant is part of the growing chain of Seafood specialists. They serve a selection of hot and cold favourites, including Oysters and Lobster bisque, as well as a specials board which changes daily. Their two course lunch at £9.95 is great value. home-style gujarati cooking The Meze Bar RestaurantPick any hot day and it'll be crowded inside and out. The staff are very friendly - hardly surprising as we don't think they get many complaints about the food. The menu is extensive and tantalizing, though the mixed meze is a staple for most customers. Quality TandooriQuality looks different to most tandooris and is a contemporary Bangladeshi restaurant with style and the food to match. It’s not a place to fall into after a heavy night at the pub, as it’s a little bit more expensive than most curry houses and it's worth staying sober to appreciate the menu! The tastes are often subtle rather than overpowering and they do a good range of specialties as well as their Chef's own favourites. It's worth asking the waiters for their recommendations - you'll be spoilt for choice. Rani Vegetarian RestaurantThis award-winning restaurant has been going for the best part of 20 years or so. It prides itself on home-style Gujarati cooking and has an excellent, authentic menu. All the items on the menu are freshly cooked, including the mouth-watering chutneys. It gets quite busy so it's advisable to book. Solly'sThis local institution provides authentic Kosher Israeli food and continues despite its founder, Solly, passing away several years ago. The restaurant is on two levels: the upstairs 'Solly's exclusive' serves more upmarket food, whereas the recently refurbished downstairs is more of a bistro. The wine list includes an interesting selection of Israeli and French wines. Sun and Sand Bar RestaurantThis relaxed bar and restaurant serving modern Indian food attracts a diverse crowd. There is a pool table out in the back and they have an extensive wine list and cocktail menu. Toff's of Muswell HillVoted 'The Best Fish and Chip Shop in the UK' in 1989 and 1990, this is a great local chippie with a traditional air. You can take away your freshly fried fish, or sit in the restaurant out the back. There are also some slight deviations to usual fare, with calamari, Sea Bass and Dover Sole taking their place on the menu. BARS AND PUBSCafé LocoThis popular bar draws theÌý trendy crowd with DJ’s on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and salsa classes on a Tuesday. Ha! Ha! Bar and CanteenThis slick West End-style bar is the perfect place to sip cocktails, snack or have a full meal from their eclectic menu. They do a good brunch menu, which should always be complimented by a newspaper or magazine on the weekend. There's a beer garden at the back for lazy, hazy summer days. The DignityThis trendy café/bar is little more café than bar - a good place to meet up for a coffee and some reasonable food. Outdoor tables and chairs in summer give a slight continental feel, whilst a live band plays every Sunday from 7-10.30pm, the perfect accompaniment to your Sunday roast. traditional pub with a nice atmosphere Maddens Ale HouseThis friendly pub has been named 'pub of the year 2004' for the Barnet area by Camra. At the front is a long narrow bar where traditionalists can sip their pints from small tables in peace, but at the back it's a little trendier with large leather sofas to relax and chill out on. Mitre InnThis cosy, old-style pub is situated in a building that reportedly dates back to 1633.Ìý Inside, it serves the usual pub grub and has split level seating. Victoria StakesA wonderful gastro pub that is well worth the trip up or down the hill! The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. They have a wonderful dining garden for the summer and roaring open fires in the winter. Ye Olde Monken HoltA traditional pub with a nice atmosphere. There are four real ales on tap and proper pub grub – steak and kidney pie is a particular favourite. Near Hadley Woods and Common, it's a great stop off point before or after a walk. CLUBSBar XLTake a trip around the globe from Monday - Sunday, including a 70's/ 80's/ 90's DJ mix on Friday, karaoke on Thursday, Asian/Bhangra on Saturday and chill-out on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesdays they feature live sport, whilst the food menu has a heavy Asian emphasis. regular workshops at the youth theatre ARTS AND CULTUREAlexandra Palace'Ally Pally' is worth a visit for its stunning architecture and spectacular views of the city, but other draws are the ice rink, skate park, children's playground and 196 acres of parkland. They also have regular exhibitions and shows. ArtsdepotA new purpose built cultural centre for North London, which offers a vibrant mix of performing and visual arts, arts related training courses and a wide range of participatory activity. With two theatres, a digital production and performance space, exhibition areas and studio /rehearsal areas, the centre is part of a larger town centre development including shops, health and leisure facilities, flats and restaurants. Barnet MuseumThis small museum houses a huge range of exhibitions including archaeological exhibitions and a social history of the area. Church Farmhouse MuseumBuilt in 1660, this museum is the oldest surviving dwelling in Hendon. Take a stroll back in time by visiting the Victorian furnished dining room, kitchen and scullery or check out their programme of changing exhibitions throughout the year. jewish life in london's east end Finchley Youth TheatreIf you're aged between 11 and 25 and want to tread the boards, work behind the scenes of a theatre, or just fancy making new friends, this is a great place to start. There are regular workshops in drama, dance and technical theatre skills, and regular productions. The Garden Suburb TheatreThe Garden Suburb Theatre is an award-winning amateur drama group, which is one of the oldest and largest theatre groups in North West London. They put on five full productions a year - one of which is children’s classic - and during the summer there's an outdoor production. Shows are normally held at: Incognito TheatreThis 60 seater theatre started live productions 50 years ago. Since then it has put on high quality amateur theatre. Some of its past members have gone on to become rather well known – David Jason (better known as Dell Boy in 'Only Fools and Horses') started his career here and is now the patron. They are keen to find new members to join the group either in an an acting, backstage or audience capacity. art-house films at Phoenix cinema Upstairs at the GatehouseSituated above one of the oldest pubs in the area, the auditorium that now houses the theatre was opened in 1895 as "a place suitable for balls, Cinderellas and Concerts". its various uses have included a Victorian Music Hall, a cinema, a Masonic Lodge and a venue for amateur dramatics. It is now home to a variety of professional performances. Jewish MuseumThis museum has an excellent permanent exhibition tracing many aspects of Jewish life in London's East End. There is a moving Holocaust Education Gallery, which tells the story of London born Auschwitz survivor Leon Greenman. Museum of Domestic Design & Architecture (MoDA)MoDA houses what is widely regarded as one of the world's most comprehensive collections of nineteenth and twentieth century decorative arts for the home. sunshine at Cherry Tree Wood CINEMASBarnet OdeonFrom Hollywood to Bollywood, this five screen cinema is the place to catch a Saturday night movie. You'll find people strolling around every day all year long, but it doesn't get overly crowded. The annual village festival is a must for all the locals and those who come in from further afield. Highgate WoodThere's an intriguing entrance on the East Finchley side of Highgate Wood and we'd love to know who designed it. It's a local challenge to everyone with a pushchair, requiring both reverse and forward modes. However, it's worth the effort as Highgate Wood is another local treasure of flora and fauna; the dominating trees here are oak and hornbeam. There's also a high population of bird life, foxes, squirrels, bats, moths, butterflies and 80 species of spiders! After your walk around there's a café serving mainly organic food and drinks. For the youngsters, there's an impressive supervised children's playground, cricket field and football pitch. Oak Hill ParkThis lovely park has plenty of lush green space as well as tennis courts. The park hosts the East Barnet Festival - a community-orientated festival featuring two days of music & dance, arts and sport. Rowley Green CommonBarnet's only bog, the site is a mix of woodlands (mostly Oak and Birch), grassland and boggy ponds. Friary ParkCafé, kids play, bowls green tennis courts. Victoria ParkVictoria Park is an attractive open space boasting tennis courts, a play area and bowls green. SPORT AND LEISURE CENTRESBarnet Football ClubBarnet's eight-year battle for a new stadium in the borough continues, although there are plans to upgrade the present Underhill site in the short term. Barnet are currently managed by Paul Fairclough, who combines the role with guiding the England non-league international squad.
