Charlee DrewLeicester singer-songwriter Charlee Drew is focusing all of his energy on completing his debut album. Oh, and waterguns! Charlee Drew is no stranger to life as a musician. He joined his first band at 14 and has travelled around the country on tour. Now at the grand old age of 21 he's looking to release his first solo album, infused with pop, ska and jazz beats.

Help playing audio/video For Charlee his music is all about the lyrics and voice, although he does play a little guitar and piano to facilitate the songwriting process: "I like to keep my lyrics down to earth as a opposed to using too many metaphors as they get in the way." Aware of the cliche, Charlee says he must admit that he listens to a huge range of music, with only a couple of genres that he largely dodges. After giving up work as a sound technician and booking agent, he is now fully focused on producing his debut album. Charlee recently travelled down to London to lay down a few of the first tracks in a studio once owned by Pink Floyd, no less. Due to a current lack of backing it turned out to be a rather expensive trip, however fun was had with a water gun aimed at unlucky pedestrians they passed on the journey down: "Some people take it really well, and some people really don't." Charlee Drew What's in a Name?Although for now Charlee is keen to be picked up by a label and tour the country, he doesn't see himself staying in the spotlight for ever: "I don't intend to be on the front of it all for the entirety of my life. I don't intend to be the next Tom Jones who's doing 60 years here and there. "But I'll hopefully be behind the scenes by the end of it, writing songs for other people." Something that is already in development, although Charlee was careful not to let slip any names. Talking of names, if you're wondering about his own spelling, it's not a way to make himself stand out from the rest, but an attempt to tackle the local accent: "I live in Leicester and people tend to call me Char-leh. So I figured that if I spelt it Char-lee people would not be able to!" last updated: 03/07/2009 at 13:26 SEE ALSOYou are in: Leicester > Entertainment > Music > Local Music Scene > Introducing...
