Attention! Young movie fans....

A new initiative has been launched to provide free screenings of recent and classic films by MediaFish - a co-operative of young people passionate about film.

Young movie fans are in luck. From Friday 25 January 2008, free screenings of some of the best new and classic movies will be screened in the city centre. Courtesy of MediaFish, a cooperative of young people from Leeds who are passionate about film, a host of classic titles such as 'The Matrix', 'Breakfast At Tiffanys', 'Rocky' and Manga classic 'Akira' will all be shown in the coming weeks.

The films are aimed at young people between 12-19, and parents and carers are welcome and encouraged to come along too. The selected titles are a mix of well-known classics and some new titles that young people may not have already seen, or may have missed the chance to see them in the multiplexes.

Thanks to the support of Leeds Metropolitan University, MediaFish are able to screen the movies at the Electric Press screening room on Millennium Square. All the MediaFish screenings are free of charge to members and membership to the group is absolutely free!

MediaFish is also supported by the council's Leeds Young People's Film Festival which takes place again during the Easter holidays (Sunday 27 March –Ìý Monday 4 April 2008. The event (now in its ninth year) will offer young people from all over Leeds the chance to see an amazing array of new and unseen films from around the world and get involved in a range of free filmmaking workshops.

The Film Festival is also looking for any aspiring young filmmakers under the age of 19 to submit their short films (maximum running time - 10 minutes) for the National Young Filmmakers' Award, the only competition of its kind in the UK. Judged by a panel of film industry professionals, there are prizes of £250 available to the winners of each age group category: 9-13 and 14-19. Deadline for entries is Friday 25th January 2008. Liam, aged 15, MediaFish member, said: "What's great about MediaFish is that we get the chance to watch movies that we want to see, the way we want to see them with other people who do too. And there's free popcorn!"
