For the first time at Leeds Town Hall, a giant screen will be erected to show two of Chaplin’s great silent films, The Adventurer and The Immigrant, with the orchestra of Opera North playing film composer Carl Davis’ original accompaniments live on stage. Chaplin was born in London, in 1889, starting his career in Victorian music hall before going on to become one of the first global stars of the cinema notably in his role as The Tramp. Both of the short films to be screened in Leeds date from 1917. Carl Davis is a renowned composer for film and TV. is credits include the 91Èȱ¬'s Pride & Prejudice and ITV's World at War. He was also joint composer with Paul McCartney of the Liverpool Oratorio. The concert forms part of the 20th Leeds International Film Festival. The evening also includes music by Prokovief, Shostakovich and Bernstein. The programme: The Immigrant (1917) Chaplin endures a challenging voyage and gets into trouble as soon as he arrive in America. The Adventurer (1917) Chaplin escapes from prison. After rescuing a girl and her mother from drowning he is treated like a hero. But when his photo is printed in the newspapers the prison guards come after him.
