First Light was launched by the UK Film Council in May 2001. To date it has given around 8,500 young people the chance to produce films under the guidance of professional film makers. Sir Ian McKellen was amongst the stars paying tribute to the work of youngsters from Leeds, who scooped the Best Comedy Award at the 2005 First Light Film Awards ceremony held in London's Leicester Square Wednesday 23 February 2005.Ìý The award-winning film, The Making of Untitled, was produced by a group of 30 filmmakers aged between 16 and 18, working with Leeds-based Access Moving Image. The spoof documentary follows the trials and tribulations of a budding film director as he deals with misbehaving crew members, a vicious producer, egotistical actors and no script.Ìý Comedy Award judge and acclaimed actor, writer and comedian Stephen Fry praised the film: "The most sure-footed and clearest in execution, narrative line and performance of the three (nominated films). Very funny in places too. "The two daffy soundmen made me laugh out loud every time they were on screen:Ìýreminded me of Bill and Ted on alternating uppers and downers. The underplayed pain and misery of the director was superbly done." The youngsters were presented with their award by Natalie Press (star of BAFTA winning film My Summer of Love) at the ceremony.

The awards celebrate shining examples of digital short films made by 5 to 18-year-olds through the UK Film Council's Lottery-funded programme, First Light. First Light chief executive officer Pip Eldridge says: "It's fantastic to be able to praise the achievements of these filmmakers.ÌýWe hope that their success will inspire other young people from Leeds to take a greater interest in filmmaking."
