Big sight

I'm in my second year of learning Russian at school, and will be taking it for GCSE next year. So far, one of my favourite words has to be that for 'sight', which is достопримечательность, pronounced 'dostopreemetchatelnost'. Now that's a mouthful!

Re: long words for Hannah - I studied Russian at "A" Level 30 years ago and I think "agricultural" was the longest word we had to deal with.
se'lskohozyaistvenno, or something like that ! I'm a bit "rusty". But it came up quite often, as they like their collective farms (kolhozy ?) !

P.S. My name transliterates to kit = whale !

Come on, it's only 2 syllables longer than the German equivalent Բü徱𾱳

Oh, come on... it's still not that bad as German "die Betäbungsmittelverschreibungsverordnung" (regulation requiring a prescription for an anesthetic), "das Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz" (beef labelling regulation).

I am from the former GDR, but was still a child when the Wende took place. Many adults from before that time had to learn Russian. And even though they have forgotten most of their Russian by now, each and everyone still claims to understand one word: dostoprimechatel'nosti.

Yeah, Russian words are generally pretty long. This one is made with two other words: udostoit', to honour, and primechat', to notice. So dostoprimechatel'nost' basically means "honorable to be noticed".

And it gets even better when you want to say you go sightseeing: osmatrevat' dostoprimechatel'nosti.
