Contact lenses for dinner

I was staying in Spain with a friend's family. I'm a vegetarian so my friend's mum, a native English speaker, tried to explain in Spanish that I was a 'good' vegetarian as I ate lentils. However, she used the word lentillas and got a very strange look. She said that I ate 'contact lenses'! The Spanish word for 'lentils' is lentejas.

Well, I live in Spain, and not so long ago my Mum and I asked for something like lentejas de contacto in an optica, although fortunately we realized our slip of the tonque quite fast :)

Gosh, I've done the very same myself, although when I corrected myself, I used the word for 'sequins',lentejuelas, rather than lentillas!

I studied in Spain and my host brother made a great lentil stew. He was very amused when I requested 'contact lenses' when he asked what I wanted for dinner.
