Only fools rush in

When I was living in Italy I befriended a couple. I received an email from them saying they were getting married and I must come and see them. I told all our mutual friends about the good news and sent them a congratulation card. I asked them for the date so I could get time off work. At this point my friends got quite confused, then figured out the problem. 'We are getting married' is ci stiamo sposando, but what they've written to me was ci stiamo spostando - we are moving house!

As a ragazza alla pari (au pair) I answered the door to the postman afterlunch, who asked for the Signore of the house. I replied confidently, si sta risposando (he's remarrying himself) instead of si sta riposando (he's resting). Though a little confused at the time, the postman later regaled my employer with the hilarious anecdote....

Italians get it right! Marriage is a moving experience so they kept only one letter difference in these two words. :-)
