You're delicious!

In Hamburg on a summer holiday, I went out for a meal with my friends, who didn't speak much German. Wanting to tell the waitress how much he'd enjoyed his meal, one of my friends said: Ich habe gut geschmeckt. He had to be corrected through fits of giggles to Es hat mir gut geschmeckt. Instead of saying 'It tasted good', he'd said 'I tasted good'!

Oh dear, I'm sure I've put Ich habe gut geschmeckt on a piece of coursework for German! Haha, that would have surprised the examiners!

Yes Gareth. Compliments on food can go awry. A rather stiff maiden aunt of my wife went to a lot of trouble to give us dinner. At the end of the meal I said Das war lächerlich. The atmosphere froze. My wife quickly intervened. Brian! Du meinst "lecker" hoffentlich, you mean "delicious" hopefully. I've said "ridiculous".
