A messy apology

When spending a year abroad in Austria as part of my German degree, I moved into a lovely flat in Klagenfurt. My neighbour came round to introduce himself just as I was unpacking and I wanted to apologise for the mess. Sadly, I confused the word for 'mess', which is Durcheinander, with Durchfall and said Leider ist überall Durchfall. After his polite excuses and quick exit I realised that I'd just apologised for diarrhoea, Durchfall, being all over my flat!

I lived with a German family for two months during my A-levels and one evening before going out the host mother said she hoped I would have a nice time. I intended to say Danke, gleichfalls, thank you, you too, but instead said Danke, Durchfall, thank you, diarrhoea. The mother just looked at me and smiled bemused.
