Nearly departed

A few years back I was due to go on a business trip to France with a colleague. On the morning of the trip, however, he called me to say that he had too much on and could I make his excuses at the hotel etc. As I arrived at the hotel late at night I decided that the explanations could wait until morning. As I was checking out the following morning, the receptionist archly remarked that my colleague didn't arrive. Deciding that being busy was perhaps too flimsy an excuse, I decided to tell her that he was ill (just in case she had any notions of charging me for his room too). Ah non, I began, malheureusement il est mort. It was only when she began offering her sincere condolences that I realised what I had said. In my defence, it was very early in the morning and mort, dead, does sound a little bit like the more appropriate malade, ill.
