Watch TV quizzes
TV quiz shows are also a great place to start. Get a tape with 4-6 episodes and watch them repeatedly.1. The format is very predictable, so you usually know 'what the conversation is about'. The scripts are usually focussed on core vocabulary and typical (interogative) useage.2. It's repetitious, and even absolute beginners will soon begin to recognise the frequently-used phrases. 3. Spoken language is more standardised in a quiz than you might find on the street; the people try to 'talk clearly' and accents tend to be moderated. 4. You also learn about the country and people, the way they 'really' are; how to introduce yourself, pick up current word-usage and topics of conversation.5. As an absolute beginner, impress quiz-show-watching locals by knowing the answer to the big-prize question.

I watch l'eredita when in Italy as the questions are shown on screen as well as spoken.
