Read comics
Comics written in the language I'm learning have always helped me understand cultural expressions because of the images that go along with it. Also because the pictures and words are 'frozen' in front of you, you can take your time with it.

Whilst comics are written in simple language they can contain many slang or unusual words as well. Comics and comedy can also be problematic until you gain a good understanding of the cultural background many jokes are based on. If you understand the words but they make no sense there is probably some references you don't know. If you are more advanced in your learning finding out about these can be revealing.
Asterix is an international comic that is published in all major European languages - I have a Spanish one on my computer. There are computer versions made for learning the language.
