It's twins!

Alpes-Maritimes, 23rd of October

Janie and AshleySince I last wrote my diary entry, we have had some good news: Je suis enceinte, I'm pregnant. We are thrilled because we thought we were unable to have des enfants, children, as I have a medical condition. The other fantastic news is that it's des jumeaux, twins! We went to a top consultant here in Nice last January to see what could be done to help, and he suggested that we contact a clinic in Barcelona to see about la donation d'ovules, egg donation. In France they do not offer this, as they do not freeze eggs.

Great expectations

This was why we went to Barcelona last May, to see whether they would be able to help us. Once we had the all-clear, I went back to Spain in August for the transfer of two eggs. Ashley had already driven down there, and done his bit. This is great as the babies will be his. The donor was anonymous, but we understand that she was 25 years old.Ten days later, I took un test de grossesse, a pregnancy test, and it was positif, positive. I had to ask the lady three times just to make sure I heard her correctly. I then had to make an appointment with my local doctor, who confirmed it and referred me to an obstetrician in Nice.

Licence to sit and jump the queue

Janie and catMy doctor issued me with a document to confirm my pregnancy, which is called la Déclaration de Grossesse. I had to take this to the offices of la Caisse d'Allocations Familiales or CAF which is the department of insurance and family benefits. This must be done within 14 weeks of the initial medical examination, or else one risks losing benefits.I am now waiting for a pass from CAF, which gives me permission, as a pregnant woman, to go to the front of the queue in public places, and demand that someone gives up their seat to me in a public place or on public transport. I think of some of my friends on the tube in London being heavily pregnant, and noticing people trying not to catch their eye just to keep their seat.Again, the problem is that neither of my two doctors speak English. I have also been given a pregnancy book, in French. So I'm trying to learn all these new words, which will help me in the weeks to come.
