Not the doctor (English/German)
The German word for 'doctor' is Arzt. But then you come across a word that reads Notarzt. Don't get confused - it's not a warning saying the holder of the title is 'not' a doctor. Not means 'emergency' - so no need to worry.

When I arrived in Austria to study there, I had some basic German vocab, the word Ausgang = Exit included. Can you imagine my confusion while I was just about to use a glass door leading outside when I spotted a NOTAUSGANG sign on it?
Our first meal in Germany was in a restaurant. We spoke very little German - none! The menu was a mystery and we had left the dictionary in our room but my wife thought 'Schinken' seemed near enough to be chicken and ordered it. To our consternation, the 'chicken' turned out to be ham! We often laugh at our naivety.
Well, the German Not has a long 'o', different than the English "not". But you can't hear that when you read the word, of course.
When I just arrived to Hamburg to study, I went to the post office and said: "Ich möchte dieses Paket Schinken (ham)" and the lady at the counter took some time to realize that I meant "schicken" (to send).
