Struggling to make friends at school

I'm 16 years old and have moved to France with my family. It has been a very eye-opening experience so far. I find it very beautiful and peaceful here but even with my four years of French I had at school back in England I'm struggling to make friends at school here. I've been put two years back rather than one because I don't speak fantastic French. This is something families should consider when moving with their children. Yes, it will give your children a wonderful opportunity to learn a language but it can also be a hard and lonely experience. Also I found with the numbers of British moving to France the French are beginning to become a little hostile. Many think at first glance it's the perfect picture but I've found moving here isn't a holiday; it's life.

Hang in there Rebecca, its tough when you are young and your friends back home are so important to you. It does take a long time to make new friends and especially in another language, I have been there too... Keep in touch with your friends over the internet, get skype, it's free and get them to use it too! Make loads of new friends in your new place, it will eventually get easier. I agree with you though, its not all 'A Place in the Sun' but each day will get easier and there will be a time when you are so glad you went through it.. Good luck x

My friend is your age and is at a boarding school in France, yet she can only just speak some French and she is in the year you should be.
