Be patient, don't give up

We have been in the throes of buying a property in a small village just in the Dordogne since last September. We are doing this via a French solicitor and have found the most frustrating problem to be French bureaucracy. Nothing happens quickly - in fact nothing seems to happen at all for weeks at a time. We have had the keys to the property, lived in it for a month, done loads of work on it, filled it with furniture, yet it is still not ours officially and our money is still in a French bank! Our advice: Be patient, do not give up, think very hard before committing yourselves if you do not speak the language and think you can get away with pointing and speaking loudly. It might work in a supermarket, it doesn't in a lawyer's office. If like us you love French and France, then persevere. We go out again in two weeks time and hopefully will come home as owners of a property in France.
