East Coast Ferret Rescue

This rescue organisation started in 1998 and provides homes for ferrets that need them.

Rick and Dee Dunn are based in East Yorkshire although their interests in ferrets brings them into contact with people from all over the world. In fact, as they reveal in their interview, ferrets travel across the world and even have their own passports.

Rick got his first ferret when he was only eight years old as a gift from his grandfather. He tames unruly ferrets who might be inclined to 'nip' their owners and helps his wife Dee help to re-home the furry creatures who for one reason or another may need to find a new home. The ferret is a domesticated creature which cannot survive in the wild and make affectionate pets for people of all ages.

Dee and Rick travel the country visiting shows such as the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate (as the main picture) although they are often seen at local shows too, entertaining and informing the crowds about ferrets. One particular show event is 'ferret' bingo, involving an arrangement of tubes and people are encouraged to guess which tube the first ferret will emerge from.

Rick and Dee's ferrets are famous for nipping Jonathan Ross on television and are always happy to oblige people if they have questions about them. The collective noun for ferrets is a 'mess' and their young are called 'kits'. Female ferrets reach maturity quickly and are much smaller than their male counterparts.

One female can produce a litter of up to 18 kits. The lifespan of a ferret can be as much as ten years and each has it's own distinctive personality and they are inquisitive creatures who will stick their noses into anything. They found the radio studio particularly interesting and moved too quickly for the camera.

East Yorkshire Coast Ferret rescue is supported by many close friends who offer practical help to support the cause of ferret rescue. They also work in conjunction with organisations such as the PDSA and the RSPCA.

The couple have a number of other interests, notably Rick who hand makes fishing nets on request and has been asked to demonstrate his skills to members of the public at various shows.
