80's Luke

With a comic eye on the culture of the 1980s, 80s Luke has a rich seam to mine. This Mancunian takes to the stage fortnightly in Hull to host a comedy night and has appeared on TV's 'Shameless'.

Two men on stage 470

80s Luke loves to laugh and to make other people laugh too which is just as well as he's a stage comedian, compere and promoter. For as long as he can remember he's gorged himself on the work of comedians from all ages. Born in 1980 he's draws his influences and inspiration from a wide range of comedy styles, both traditional or alternative. Everyone from Tommy Cooper to French and Saunders have had some sort of influence on his style and wit.

Based in Manchester he travels to venues across the country and regularly stops off for a fortnightly comedy event called 'Death by Comedy' which he hosts at the The Window Bar of the George Hotel, in Hull's Land of Green Ginger.

His quick fire humour and impressions which draw on the culture of the 1980s have served him well. He's appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe, supported Peter Kay and appeared in the Channel 4 series Shameless as a radio presenter. Something he does for real when the opportunity affords itself. Although he freely admits you'll have to listen closely to the soundtrack of the programme to hear him.

One of the highlights of his relatively short career was in 2006 when he won the 'Beat the Frog' competition at Manchester's 'Frog and Bucket'. Loosely described as a 'gong show' performers are allowed to perform until voted off by members of the audience. Having attempted to win the competition a number of times he persevered until one night victory came on a night when one of his comedy heroes, Toby Hadoke was acting as compere. He says it's Toby who inspired him to take on a career.

80s Luke says working at so many clubs and venues across the country with a wide cross section of audiences is giving him a huge experience of what it's like to please a variety of audiences and he's indebted to the support his family give him. Although he says he's sometimes worried by what his mum thinks when she's sitting in the audience listening to his colourful routines.
