'Rev-Ray' Ray Eveleigh

In addition to playing live music at various functions and making CDs, this retired Anglican clergyman also authors jazz courses and runs a 'Gentle Jazz' club.

Ray Eveleigh who goes under the professional name of Rev-Ray is busier than ever since his retirement. All thanks to his passion for playing the piano in public. He regularly plays to live audiences with an jazz band that grows and shrinks according to the occasion.

His family and musical roots lie in Treherbert in South Wales. His father George played the ukulele and emulated his part namesake George Formby playing much of his material. Ray studied Physics and Mathematics at the University of Wales and went on to study music at the college of Music and Drama in Cardiff where he met his wife Brenda, who when performing with Ray's band uses her maiden name of Kirk.

Ray and Brenda made their home in East Yorkshire and Ray was teaching computing to students when computers took up small rooms and had to be serviced by a team of engineers when the machines struggled after an hour of computations.

In his interview, Ray describes what drew him to become a Priest in the Anglican Church. During his time with the Church he always brought his musical talent to the fore and describes how music is very much interwoven with his faith. He studied Theology at the University of Hull, and was awarded an MA.

Ray's been fortunate to play piano in the United States and was privileged to meet jazz trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison of whom Ray speaks fondly and in his interview tells the story of a memento of his meeting with "Sweets" which he will treasure for always.

Since his retirement he's working harder than ever. From running jazz courses, recording CDs, (a new one of which is due for release shortly) and performing at various functions with his band mates whom he enjoys working with very much there's little time for 'retirement' duties. He still dabbles in the world of computing producing his own web pages and is fascinated by the technologies available today, a far cry from the room filling DEUCE machine he worked with many years ago.

And his picture? This was a caricature from a local artist of which Ray prizes highly. He says, it encompasses his character and interests perfectly.
