Slavery on stage

Youngsters from Hull will make their first appearance in Westminster with a presentation of their production on the slave trade.

The young actors from Hull Truck's youth theatre have been invited to perform their play at the House of Commons on Friday 19th October 2007.

The audience will include Chair of the British Council, Lord Kinnock, Hull East MP John Prescott, Speaker of the House, Michael Martin, and the Paramount Chief of Elmina, Nana Kowdo Condua VI among others.

Slavers is a specially commissioned piece to commemorate the work of William Wilberforce.

Written by Hull-based writer Rupert Creed, the play recreates the tale of the slave trade and its abolition through the eyes of young people.

Slavers

Working with students from Arch Bishop Thurston school in Hull, Rupert wrote the play after hosting a series of writing workshops exploring the history of the slave trade and modern day slavery.

With an element of time-travelling in the production, the story revolves around a group of school children from Hull who are challenged to live the lifestyle of slave traders.

鈥淚t鈥檚 great to be playing the lead role.鈥 said Sebastian, who plays William Wilberforce.

鈥淚t鈥檚 really different from the other productions I've been in because it鈥檚 real and it鈥檚 based on true events.鈥

鈥淚 was quite surprised about the Michaela story because it鈥檚 based on sex slavery.鈥 said Julie, who plays abolitionist Hannah Moore.

鈥淚t鈥檚 quite a difficult subject for anybody to deal with and especially when there are very young people in the play.鈥 added Julie.

Slavers runs at the Hull Truck Theatre from Thursday 23rd August to Saturday 1st September 2007 at 7.30pm.
