The Early Show -0500-0630 - Steve Redgrave

91热爆 Radio Humberside's 'early bird' is Steve Redgrave. Each weekday morning Steve gets up before the crack of dawn to bring you some early morning music and chat.

Q: When did your in radio interest start?
A: It's a cliche, but as a small child, I'd be under the bedcovers listening to the djs on Radio Luxembourg. It was like magic to me, thinking that someone hundreds of miles away was talking and playing their favourite records and making it sound so much fun.
Q: Tell us about your radio career.
A: I started with Kingstown Hospital Radio in Hull at the old Red Cross offices on Beverley Road in the early 1980s. It was an experience I can tell you. Our equipment was a bit antiquated to say the least. Very often you'd end up taking your own bits of kit to put a programme out. That trusy 'Tandy' casette player was worth it's weight in gold. Later, I joined the local commercial radio station as a freelance dj when it started in 1984. At the time I was working at a local bank, it was certainly an interesting clash of careers. The slightly staid banking life contrasted somewhat with the quirky radio disc jockey personality. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. When I started full-time with them I became a 'swing-jock'. This meant you got to try your hand at everyone elses' show when they were on holiday or ill. Later I became the assistant to the head of programmes and got a say on what went out across the station.
Q: How did you come to work for the 91热爆?
A: New bosses came along to the radio station where I was working and had a clear-out of the 'old guard'. I submitted a tape of stuff I'd done over the years to 91热爆 Radio York and they gave me some part-time work presenting their events diary and doing cover on some of their shows. Around the same time I wrote to 91热爆 Radio Humberside and was worked across both stations for a time before working full-time in Hull.
Q: You've been on 91热爆 Radio Humberside's Early Show since 1993, what's it like getting up at 3.15 am?
A: It's still a rude awakening that's for sure. The night before, I've a bit of a ritual involving two alarm clocks and the laying out of clothes. Every moment in bed is precious and you don't want to waste time looking for a perfectly matched pair of socks when you fall out of bed on a work day.
Q: Name some good things about getting to work so early in the morning.
A: No traffic. It's a bit frustrating waiting for the lights to change to green when there's nobody else at the traffic lights though. Going home it's a different story. It's like you've landed on a different planet with all those cars, buses, lorries and bikes. In the summer you get to sit out in the garden in the sunshine and relax when everyone is slaving away.
Q: What's a bad thing about doing the programme?
A: Yawning your way through the occasional evening do and hoping that your colleagues don't think you're being rude.
Q: What do you enjoy about The Early Show?
A: Anyone who does radio programmes that are 'out of hours', late night, overnights or early mornings knows that you've a stronger link with the listeners. They are more attentive, loyal and friendly. Through text, and email an occassionally meeting people on the odd outside broadcast you get to know what they like which gives you plenty to talk about on the radio.
Q: You're only on for an hour and a half a day. What do you do the rest of the time?
A: In addition to working on the radio side, I also contribute to the Humber website and also present a tv bulletin for the internet and local cable tv system in Hull and the surrounding areas. Occasionally, I stop and try to remember to breathe.
