I am a mother of one, living in Australia and very keen on family history. My Dad died in 1988 and although he told me many stories about his life, there are many I don't remember. As there is now no way of retrieving those lost verbal stories, I thought it would help me if I knew a little bit about my Dad during the war. I have been able to obtain his service records (he was in the RAF) but I don't know what it all means! I want to know what the trade FME means and the ranks AC1 and AC2 mean - even the names of his unit/s? must mean something to someone who knows. He was from Edinburgh, Scotland but spent most of the war in England - stationed at Abingdon for the most part. His name was George Conway and he was 20 when he enlisted in 1939. He would naturally have turned 85 this year if he was still alive. I only know the name of one of his army pals whose name was Douglas Sheffield from Coventry - I know nothing else about this person. My parents immigrated to Australia in the 60's and obviously lost touch. I have several photos of my Dad with this family and in uniform with other "soldiers?" (not sure if that's the correct term). It is likely that I'll never find out any more about his army pal or the photos, but hey, if you don't ask, you'll never know!
