I remember our home always filled with men in uniform, always somebody playing the piano, mugs of beer and a fog of cigarette smoke. My dad had finished his time in the navy before 1939 but was called back as a reservist he was at Lossiemouth, CPO stores. In 1941 I was their surprise package. When my mum died in 1996 I came across some old B & W films, only 2 pictures came out, they were taken at an army camp near Eastleigh, Hampshire, England. Queens Own Canadian Cameron Highlanders. My mum used to say "some of those boys will never see their homes & families again, so they will have in our home some home comforts, as I would hope somebody would give to my son", my elder brother turned 18 in 1946 so luckily missed active service in WW2 as a conscript and was out before Suez & Cyprus.
