My name is Albert. Not Al or Bert: Albert! Perhaps I should mention at this point, however, that during my years in North Africa and Italy, I was called Alf, {short, of course, for Alfred, my second name). I blame my close friend, Doug Ball for that. But that's another story for another time.
My active service began in August 1939 and ended in September1946: first in the infantry, 2nd Batt. Rangers, KRRC, then in the Royal Artillary, 29th L.A,A. Regt, 108th Battery.
The transfer from the one to the other was not a happy occasion for me. It could be said that I was a reluctant gunner. Today, I still think of myself as a rifleman.
