I was born in Portsmouth, but during the severe blitz of 1940 my parents moved to Emsworth, for temporary residence in my grandparent's bungalow as he had taken a job in Belfast Dockyard for the duration. My great-grandfather and grandfather spent their working lives in Portsmouth Dockyard, my father worked for the Admiralty. All three of them were awarded the Imperial Service Medal during their lifetimes, but I broke the mould by joining Lloyds Bank instead.
I did my National Service at RAF Wildenrath in Germany from 1959 to 1961, working for the security forces, attached to 88 Squadron.
I returned to the bank on completion of my National Service, but left in 1990 when I contracted a serious illness that left me permanently disabled.
