I grew up during the war in what was then a country area (now covered in houses), about 30 miles out from London. My mother and I used to go and collect orange juice, cod liver oil and rose-hip syrup (rich in vitamin c) for me and my brother from the Ministry of Food Office in town. There was a move to get people to pick rose-hips from the hedgerows for the production of the syrup, and we would be paid 3d per pound for them, which was worth doing as they weighed quite heavy, and I earned quite a bit of pocket money that way.
