I was a Driver/op in D-Troop 318 Battery 92nd LAA.Most of the regiment apart from F-Troop,which were to land first on D-day,were aboard a Liberty ship,SS Sambut,in London Docks and set sail on June 5th 1944,due to land in Normandy on D+1 to back up F-Troop at Pegasus Bridge. We rounded North Foreland early on D-day and were passing Dover at middday when the ship was struck by two shells from the German Heavy guns at Calais.A detailed account follows.Fox troop waited for us in vain and their story appears elsewhere on this site. This explains our absence.
