I lived about 5 miles from the east London Docks - R.A.D., Silvertown, etc. My family and I lived in Manor Park. My dad was in mine sweepers in HMS Fearless. We lived with my grandparents in Halley Road. A VII landed just about 8 doors from us. We used to have our bedrooms downstairs because of the incendary bombs.

The day that 'doodlebug' landed, I remember hearing the sound of the rocket, then it cut out. My mum grabbed me and we went sailing under the bed, which was then in our dinning room. My grandfather had a tank of tropical fish, which collapsed with the blast of the rocket exploding. Glass and water was every where, the windows too, had blown in. The silence after this was very strange for someone who was just about 4 years old.

I also remember standing outside out house while a convoy of army tanks and personnel drove along High Street North to the docks, to be loaded on to the ships, waiting to take them to Africa.
