This story has been submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by a volunteer from CSV Berkshire on behalf of David Harold Stallwood and has been added to the site with his permission. David Harold Stallwood fully understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.

It was 1944 and I was in the War Artillery unit. There was a plane that had crashed in the mountains of Northern Ireland and I was part of a search team that was sent out to look for survivors of the crash.

On our climb up to the crash site in the mountains we encountered thick fog and before I knew it I lost sight of my team members. And for about 15 minutes the search team had to give up looking for the crash survivors and start looking for me.

I would also like to mention that I had the honour of driving the first 7.2 Gun Howitzer through the Khyber Pass in India in 1946.
