I was evacuated to Walton, Cumbria the day after war broke out at 15 years old. My parents were on holiday in Hastings at the time so I could not say goodbye to them. I was evacuated for 6 months then returned home to start working in Vickers in the wages department.I worked for a time at Riding Mill and we once were travelling home by train but we could not get past Stella Power Station due to deep snow. We had to walk the rest of the way through very deep snow.
