This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War website by Kathy Tutt, a volunteer from 91热爆 Kent, on behalf of Mr G Hollands and has been added to the website with his permission and he fully understand the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.
Mr Hollands was a child during the war, being only 4 years old when war broke out. His story takes place around Dunton Green in 1942. His father had been a sergeant in the Royal West Kents during the first World War so he was among the first to join the newly formed 91热爆 Guard. He used to bring guns home and Mr Hollands and his brothers used to have competitions between them to see who could strip the guns down fastest. On one occasion there was a dog fight overhead and a man bailed out, shouting in German. Dad was going to shoot him but Mother stopped him in time. The pilot turned out to be Polish and the police came to take the pilot back to Biggin Hill. Mother had saved the life of a man fighting on our side!
Mr Hollands was not afraid of the war as he felt he was probably too young to understand, however he did hate being evacuated to Devon in 1943-1944.
