I remember one day turning up at Gordonbrock Primary School in Brockley with my two elder brothers and finding that only a few other children had turned up. I was about 4 or 5 and it was in 1944. So obviously there were no lessons but school dinners turned up from the local catering centre. During the morning I recall a German fighter plane coming over the school and hearing the rattle of machine gun fire on the roof. We were herded into the cloakroom which had a concrete roof and as soon as the situation was all clear we all went home. No-one was hurt as far as we know and I wonder if it was all a dream. The worst thing is my two elder brothers don't remember anything about it.
