During the war we were not allowed to have fishing boats with engines, but you could apply for a permit for a sailing boat for fishing.
My neighbour had a 14-foot international sailing dinghy and used to take me mackerel spinning. We took advantage of this to go sailing.
During the time of the Battle of Britain we went sailing and the siren went. We immediately turned for home. We got to the jetty and approaching was a low aircraft with gunfire and we promptly 'hit the deck'. It was a German fighter flying very low up the creek followed by an RAF fighter, which was firing at the German plane.
I still have a bullet, which I picked up afterwards on the jetty.
