Mr Thew's memory is submitted by The British Schools Museum on his behalf.

I was 12 and lived in Offley (near Hitchin, Hertfordshire) and went to Offley School. I remember running out of school when a lorry load of bombs had been in an accident on the main road. We were evacuated to the Gloucester Arms in Offley.

I remember a black American soldier ran up the hill to our cottages to tell mum to get out. Some people went to Kings Mill. Minnie Herd, the farmer鈥檚 wife was standing by a chimney stack and was saved by that when the explosion happened.

An aircraft crashed into Hanley's Farm in Offley.

I remember Brian and Mike Limbrick at my school and Angela Monk (Hillyard) too.
