The following story is about the several attacks by U. Boats on convoy HX126 on the 20th May, 1941, ten days out from Halifax on the way to the UK. The attack started in the early hours of the 20th May. After several ships were sunk we were ordered to disperse by the commander. We were making for Greenland when we were hit by a torpedo from U. 94 at 2:00 p.m. My cabin was amid ships, so you could not get astern, the main mast was down and she was on fire.
So I went on the boat deck with the Captain and Chief Officer and lowered the port Life Boat before getting into it. I went back to my cabin for a small case, navy issue, with articles I had picked up on the voyage plus 200 Lucky Strikes which were a life saver when we were in the Life Boats.
The Captain of U. 94 was called Kaptlt. Herbert Kuppisch. He was killed when his boat was sunk in 1943.
