I lived in central London - but my mother did not want me to be evacuated. We moved to Hounslow onto Argyl Street. Living near the railway made us a target for the bombs. Each night they came down to try and bomb the railway lines. In doing so they would blow the windows out of our house. We defended the railway using an Ack Ack gun - which fired at enemy aircraft. It went up and down the line - and this would destroy the windows in the houses too! This went on for a considerable number of nights.

One particular night they bombed Hounslow High Street. It was set alight from end to end. Incendiary bombs landed on the school and the surrounding area. There were 100s of them. A landmine landed on the railway and someone defused it. It was removed, causing no damage. They never destroyed the railway.

I used to stand at the bottom of the garden watching the dog fighters during the day. My parents always worried that something would go wrong.
