This story was submitted to the People's War by Christine McDerment from Camberley Library and has been added to the website on behalf of Ann Lawford with her permission and she fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
"I was only 18 months old when the war started. I lived in Wimbledon, on Southpark Road with my parents Jane and Andrew Skilling and my sister Audrey, who was almost four years older than me.
I may have been young, about four, I think, but I do remember when a whole street disappeared overnight in one of the raids. It was Farraday Road and my friend Jackie Robinson lived there. She and her grandmother were the only two members of her family to survive. The whole of Wimbledon was a mess, but that was a whole street!
Our little school on Effra Road went in the same raid so I didn鈥檛 get back to school till I was about seven. A teacher used to come round to the house once or twice a week to give me work to do till we were evacuated. That was for about two years.
Unless you lived through it you have no idea how much destruction there was. We had a little shop we went to for sweeties and cigarettes and things. One day it was there and the next day it had gone."
