The incident I am about to describe, took place in the early summer of 1940.

At the time, we were living at First Avenue, West Molesey. The House looked onto a huge plot of land.

My sister Joan and I had each been given a doll; this was an event in itself as money was hard to come by in those days.

On this particular day, we took the dolls down to the fields and played with them. It was a beautiful sunny day and we were unaware at the time that an air raid was in progress.

Joan and I were busy playing when bullets suddenly began pounding into a tree near to us. I remember this so well, as I looked up and told my sister to run. We ran home as fast as we could. At that moment, a plane dived down at us and a man appeared to be pointing a machine gun at us - we could hear bullets almost at our heels.

When we reached the gate, our father grabbed us and bundled us into a shelter. When we told him that we had nearly been gunned down, he didn't believe us.

In our fright and haste to get home, we had left our dolls in the field, and when it was all clear we went back to collect them.
